Metrocentre

Why did you want to enter The Revo’s?

We entered The Revo’s because this project represents a defining moment for Metrocentre, as well as the wider retail and leisure industry. The Community Diagnostics Centre (CDC) shows just how a destination can evolve beyond traditional retail to deliver meaningful and lasting social value.

The CDC is the result of strong collaboration between public and private partners who came together to address a genuine community need: improving access to healthcare. By placing a high-quality NHS facility within one of the North East’s prime retail destinations, we have created a new model for how places can serve their communities.

The Revo Awards celebrate innovation and excellence across the industry, and this initiative embodies both. It demonstrates that retail and leisure destinations can be about much more than shopping and entertainment. They can be places that make a real difference to people’s lives.

What makes your entry standout?

Our entry stands out for its social impact and pioneering use of retail space for public good. While many centres lead on environmental sustainability, Metrocentre has redefined the social side of ESG by transforming a former department store into a state-of-the-art NHS facility.

This £18.6m investment provides over one hundred and fifty thousand diagnostic appointments each year, has created one hundred and thirty jobs, and operates seven days a week to improve accessibility. With ninety percent of materials and spend sourced locally, the project also strengthens the regional economy. Its success has been recognised nationally, including by the Prime Minister, as a model for future healthcare delivery.

How do you envision the future of your industry, and how do you hope to contribute to it?

The future of the retail industry lies in creating destinations that are multi-functional, inclusive, and built around community value. Retail and leisure spaces must evolve to serve both social and economic purposes, becoming places that improve quality of life as well as commercial performance.

Metrocentre is leading that change. Through projects like the CDC and our wider Social Value Plan, we are showing how private and public partnerships can deliver long-term benefits for communities. Our goal is to inspire others to see ESG not just as a target, but as an opportunity to create lasting change in their communities.

What one word best summarises your entry?

We think the word transformative perfectly summarises the entry, because the Metrocentre CDC changes more than just how the space is occupied. It changes lives, it changes opportunities, and it changes expectations of what our industry can achieve when partnership and purpose come together.
