The Exchange Ilford

Why did you want to enter The Revo’s?

We wanted to enter The Revo’s because the past 12 months at Exchange Ilford have represented a genuine step-change in how the centre delivers environmental, social, and governance value. Through measurable waste reductions, major energy efficiencies, innovative water management, biodiversity initiatives, and deep community collaboration, the centre has demonstrated leadership that deserves to be recognised at a national level.

Our Exchange In Green project shows what can be achieved when operational excellence, stakeholder partnership, and long-term sustainability commitments are brought together with clear reporting and transparent governance. The Revo’s provide a platform to celebrate this progress, share best practice with the wider retail and placemaking industry, and highlight the collective achievements of the Exchange Ilford team, our partners, and the Redbridge community.

What makes your entry standout?

Our entry stands out because Exchange Ilford has delivered a genuine, measurable ESG transformation within just 12 months. We achieved a 37.54% reduction in total waste, lifted recycling to 55.76%, removed an entire general waste container, and generated £100,000 in annual energy savings through a full LED retrofit. We also introduced sector-leading innovations such as Smartflow water monitoring, greywater harvesting, and rooftop beehives that support local biodiversity.

Beyond the environmental impact, our social value programme is exceptional in scale ranging from an NHS diagnostic centre and free charity space to the creation of The Loft community hub and the transformation of a vacant unit into a School Uniform donation shop. Thousands of local residents benefit each year.

What makes this entry unique is that ESG isn’t a collection of projects; it’s now embedded into how the centre operates, reports, collaborates, and invests. The results are transparent, independently evidenced, and supported by tenant testimonials, demonstrating true leadership in sustainable retail destination management.

How do you envision the future of your industry, and how do you hope to contribute to it?

We believe the future of the retail and placemaking industry will be defined by sustainability, community value, and data-driven operational excellence. Retail destinations will increasingly be expected to operate as low carbon, socially connected, and transparently governed community hubs. At Exchange Ilford, we aim to help lead this shift.

We envision a future where centres run on renewable energy, achieve near-zero waste, recover and recycle water on-site, and actively restore urban biodiversity. Spaces will be more adaptable, community-led, and inclusive, blending retail with health services, culture, education, and local enterprise.

Our contribution is to prove what’s possible now:

  • by pioneering waste reduction and circular practices, scaling water-efficiency innovations like Smartflow and greywater reuse, expanding renewable energy adoption, enhancing biodiversity through rooftop hives and greening projects, and deepening our community impact through initiatives like The Loft, free charity space, and NHS partnerships.
  • By continuing to share transparent data, collaborate with industry partners, and raise standards across ESG performance, we hope to help redefine what a modern retail destination can deliver for both people and the planet.
